The State of the Technology Union

Erlend Olson shares:

As State of the Union addresses go, Obama's last week really wasn't bad -- with two exceptions. He kind of missed the Steve Jobs' lesson that if you are going to imply magical, what you say should be amazing. Having our "Sputnik moment" be faster trains, more electric cars, and faster Internet was hardly magic, though had it replaced this one in 1930 by Franklin Roosevelt, it would have met that test.

Butterfly Wings Offer Guiding Light for Nanotech Innovation

Erlend Olson shares:

The Morpho butterfly's highly evolved wings are so unique that scientists at Simon Fraser University have teamed up with NanoTech Security to reproduce their iridescent blue coloring for a new anti-counterfeiting technology. A clever pairing of nanotechnology and entomology used nanoscale microscopic holes that interact with light to reproduce the butterfly's shimmering signature.

3 IT Tools You Can't Live Without

Erlend Olson shares:

As the economy continues to improve, allowing us to feel a sense of hope that the worst is behind us, it's still critical for business owners to make sure they're making smart decisions about technology. After all, if the recession taught us anything, it's that we must be cognizant of cash flow, and make sure that our purchases are really worth the money.

To Know Software Is to Love It?

Erlend Olson shares:

Familiarity can breed contempt -- but is it also what makes one piece of software superior to another? "In many FOSS vs Closed Source project comparisons I have seen to date, 'user familiarity' is often referenced as a point of 'software superiority,'" began Jeff Hoogland recently in the Thoughts on Technology blog. "Not only is this a flawed form of logic, but it is really borderline FUD."
